Elko Cemetery
Oak Street
Elko, Houston County, Georgia

The town of Elko, located in the southern portion of Houston County,
between Grovania and Hawkinsville, was settled in the late 1800's. It was
incorporated 6 October 1891. At that time, Elko was a stop on The Georgia
Southern and Florida Railroad line. That was left behind by the 1920's.
Common surnames found in the Elko area around the time of incorporation
were BROWN, HOUSER, JOHNSON, LANE, LAWSON, LESTER, MARSHALL, MEANS, POOL,
SMITH, and STUBBS. Some of these same names can be read on tombstones
found in the Elko Cemetery.

As for agriculture, at that time, cotton was king. Today, acres and acres
of pine trees abound. The Elko Baptist Church stands today on Oak Street, and
the Elko Cemetery is located across the street.
